The Perfect Espresso Tonic for Summer

If you haven't tried an espresso tonic, summer is the time. It's one of the simplest and most refreshing coffee drinks — bitter espresso meets effervescent tonic over ice. The combination shouldn't work, but it absolutely does.

What You'll Need

  • 1 double shot of espresso (or 60ml strong coffee from a Moka pot)
  • 150ml quality tonic water (Schweppes works, Fever-Tree is better)
  • Ice — the more the better
  • Optional: a slice of orange or a sprig of rosemary

Method

Step 1: Fill a tall glass with ice to the top.

Step 2: Pour tonic water over the ice. Let it settle.

Step 3: Slowly pour the espresso over the back of a spoon so it floats on top of the tonic. This creates a beautiful gradient — dark on top, golden on the bottom.

Step 4: Add your garnish if using. Stir gently before drinking, or sip through the layers.

Why It Works

Tonic water contains quinine, which is bitter. Espresso is bitter. Together, the bitterness becomes complex rather than harsh — like a well-made Negroni. The carbonation lifts the coffee's aromatics, and the sweetness in the tonic balances the roast.

Coffee Choice

Use a light to medium roast with fruity or citrus notes. The tonic amplifies acidity in a pleasant way. Dark roasts can taste ashy here. If you have a washed Ethiopian or a bright Indian Arabica, this is the drink for it.

Make it once and it becomes a summer staple. Trust us.
